SURGERY, ANESTHESIA - VERTEBRATE SPECIES

The central mission of the Department of University Animal Care is to support research projects using animals; however this support must be accomplished while maintaining full compliance with legal and ethical guidelines. In order to be certified to perform survival surgery a one time one-hour lecture must be completed.  If you need additional to sign up for the next lecture,  scheduled quarterly, check the training home page for the schedule or contact  the IACUC Certification Coordinator at 621-3931.

SURVIVAL SURGERY - REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESS
  • adequate surgical skills
  • strict adherence to procedures to ensure aseptic results
  • familiarity with species: anatomy, physiology, pharmacology
  • anesthetics and analgesics administered as needed
  • perioperative program to provide for patient's comfort
