About Web Training Modules

At the University of Arizona, the IACUC, through the expertise of the UAC faculty/staff and other specialists, provides training to all those who work with or care for animals.

As of January 1, 2006, in order to obtain security access to the facility you must have IACUC certification, complete and submit a Risk Assessment Questionnaire to Occupational Health, and be on an approved protocol.

To complete your IACUC certification you are required to take the Laws and Regulations class as well as the Introduction to Animal Hazards Program if you are working with animals, animal tissues, etc.    Once the Laws and Introduction classes have been successfully completed there is a grace period to complete your other required classes.

Certification in species specific classes are also required if you are working hands-on with animals.

In addition, anyone performing survival surgery on a vertebrate species is required to complete the Surgery & Anesthesia module.

Most sessions are available both here on the Web and in a self-study paper format.

Information on specific courses and time/dates offered can be obtained by calling 621-3931 or by going to the registration form.  Class dates may not be available as classes are being scheduled, but this form will allow you to be entered into the system and you will be contacted once the classes are set.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should complete the modules?

While these web training modules can be viewed by the general public, we request that the only ones to submit a quiz for processing be first in the employment of a Principle Investigator at the University of Arizona

Do I have to take the zoonotic disease class?

Each lab has an occupational safety designee (OSD), usually the investigator or lab coordinator, who is required to take Zoonotic Diseases of Research Animals and is responsible for assuring their research group is in compliance with the animal hazards program.  Some OSD's require the entire lab to complete this class to ensure everyone is aware of the risks and safety issues involved.  Therefore, it is up to your OSD if you need this class.

If you have questions on who should submit a quiz, please contact Certification Coordinator at 621-3931.
