INJECTION TECHNIQUES

The loose skin over the shoulders and neck is an ideal site for subcutaneous injection.

Placement of needle for subcutaneous injection.

Intramuscular injections may be performed in the thigh muscles on the front of the rear limb, or more often, using the hamstring muscles on the back side of the rear leg.

One must avoid hitting the sciatic nerve, so when injecting into the hamstring muscle group, be sure to direct the needle backwards, or caudal.

Placement of intramuscular injection into quadriceps

Lateral saphenous venipuncture.

The saphenous vein on the outside of the rear limb below the knee may be used.


Procedure for Administering Pills & Liquids

Use forceps to hold capsule or tablet.

Placing capsule on base of animal's tongue.

Forming a cheek pouch for administration of liquids.

Administering liquid medication orally.


Proper Endotracheal Procedures

Premeasuring length ofendotracheal tube required for animal.

Restraint of animal for endotracheal intubation.
